In its second year and fifth event, Xbox Game Studios announces Game Camp Africa, which aims to bring the joy and community of gaming to the world’s population and “help African game studios realize their vision and role in the global gaming industry,” said Phil Spencer, CEO of Gaming at Microsoft.

The Journey of A Game

This summer’s theme is “The Journey of A Game,” and aims to provide insight into the complex world of game development. By empowering creators and focusing on their potential, the camp hopes to make a real difference in the gaming community.

Sure, it’s no Mandalorian-themed Xbox. But, hosting a camp that gives young creators the tools and confidence they need to grow might be better in the long run. The two-day event is virtual but campers are welcome to see the fun in person at various Microsoft offices. If that wasn’t exciting enough already, Microsoft is also urging teams and individuals with games to pitch, to do so.

About The Camp

Walk-in locations will be in Cairo, Johannesburg, Lagos, and Nairobi. There, campers can attend viewing parties, panel discussions, and even meet Microsoft and Xbox personnel. With that said, there will also be significant online learning components. For instance, all camp presentations, panels, and workshops will be streamed live online for registered campers. External developers and Xbox employees will run workshops on various game development topics. As a result, participants will be able to engage in learning relevant to their interests and skills before, during, and even after the event.

Requirements

According to Xbox Game Studios’ official Game Camp site, to participate, individuals must:

  • Be of legal age.
  • Reside in any African country.
  • Be studying or working part or full-time in the field of software development, visual arts, 3D, music and audio, web design, narrative design, or professional project management.
