One of the biggest debates amongst Harry Potter fans is which House is the best. And by extension, which one should you choose when playing Hogwarts Legacy? Of course, no singular Hogwarts House is better than all the others, but it doesn’t stop everyone from having opinions on why their House is the greatest. But whether you are a Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin, we all have a place at Hogwarts.
It all started with each House’s founding members: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin. Each one takes on new students every year and the Sorting Hat considers each student’s values and heart to determine where they will be placed. But which House should you choose when you play Hogwarts Legacy? To answer this, let’s look at the history behind each one and see if it influences your decision.
Slytherin

Or perhaps in Slytherin,
You’ll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means,
To achieve their ends.
The cunning Salazar Slytherin founded this House, and as such, Slytherin House prided itself on having resourceful students, natural leaders, and plenty of ambition. Unfortunately, they are often painted as the “bad guys” in the Harry Potter series, which has led them to be vastly misunderstood, as Slytherin House usually picks those who wish for their goals to reflect their ambition and have the guts to pull it off.
Nestled under the Black Lake, the Slytherin common room is breathtaking. With its glass windows that reveal what lurks under the Black Lake and the emerald curtains lining stone walls, you’ll feel at home here. It is pretty moody in its atmosphere, given the soft green glow from the sun’s reflection through the Black Lake and the dark furniture, but it still has plenty of comfy chairs and loungesto relax on. One of the more impressive features of this common room is its grand stone staircase leading up to a statue of Salazar Slytherin holding a skull in his hand.
The most unique thing about Slytherin House inside Hogwarts Legacy is that occasionally the giant squid that resides underneath the Black Lake will appear if you continuously use your primary cast on any of the three windows. Then, it will slam one of its tentacles on the window as if annoyed with your insolence before slinking away. It’s a fantastic little Easter Egg for you to experience!
Some of their more notable members are the infamous Merlin, Phineus Nigellus Black, Severus Snape, Bellatrix Lestrange, and the feared Lord Voldemort, or, as he was known then, Tom Riddle.
These famous witches and wizards made their marks on the world in their own way, both good and bad, which only added to their strained reputation. Unfortunately, this reputation also went hand in hand with how the Sorting Hat took blood status into account when sorting students into Slytherin, as Salazar only highly favored students of “pureblood.” But don’t let these facts deter you from picking Slytherin as your House. It is still full of outstanding students who are still kind and loyal companions who you could use in your corner.
Ravenclaw

“Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you’ve a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind.“
Ravenclaws are by far the most intelligent, witty, and wise of all the other houses, with their general know-how making them superb students. You would often find them practicing many different spells and enchantments outside of regular coursework in their pursuit of knowledge and showcasing their smarts to anyone near them and being exceptionally good with their memory. If this all sounds like you, then you belong in Ravenclaw amongst those who share similar interests and curiosity.
The Ravenclaw common room has by far one of the best entrances out of the other Houses, with a great metal raven guarding the door that asks you a riddle to enter. If you got it wrong, it simply would not budge or give you another chance, meaning students had to wait for another Ravenclaw to come and attempt the riddle. If you are up for this challenge, then you are ready to join this House.
Some esteemed members of Ravenclaw include Helena Ravenclaw, Garrick Ollivander, Luna Lovegood, Cedric Diggory, Filius Flitwick, and Sybill Trelawney.
Something to note about Ravenclaws is that they are very competitive in academic prowess, being known to “backstab” their fellow classmates and even fellow Ravenclaws to achieve high marks. However, other than their own personal achievements, Ravenclaws are neutral in more petty House squabbles, even in Quidditch. Those who deem themselves wise and eager to learn should choose Ravenclaw for their House.
Gryffindor

“You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart“
One of the more recognizable of all the other Houses is Gryffindor, which is the home to those who value bravery and courage. Most notably, it was the home of Harry Potter and his friends throughout the Harry Potter book series, and its common room was the backdrop for many scenes in the movies that followed them. The common room in Hogwarts Legacy lives up to our expectations with its ruby and gold lined walls, comfy chairs, and high wooden beams. Presenting itself as a cozy and warm environment, it’s no wonder Harry and his friends spent most of their time here studying.
The entrance to Gryffindor’s common room is guarded, just like the rest, by the painting of the Fat Lady. You have to give her the correct password to enter so she can swing aside her portrait to reveal the door for students to enter.
If you are looking to pick a House full of famous witches and wizards who have defied great odds and conquered mighty foes, look no further. Gryffindor has been called home by Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, Sir Cadogan (who was a Knight of the Round Table), Harry Potter, and Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, also known as Nearly Headless Nick.
Gryffindors are often described as brave, but usually, they are synonymous with recklessness. They can often be seen getting into trouble and were regarded by other Houses as engaging in “pointless heroics.” This dangerous courage leads them into a fierce rivalry with Slytherin House, as their pride does not allow them to be second best against them and embarrass their House. Gryffindors are fiery and short-tempered people, but they are loyal friends and bold competitors.
Hufflepuff

“You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true,
And unafraid of toil.“
Last but most certainly not least, Hufflepuff House is proud to accept any students who don’t fit into one particular House. Taking any who are intelligent, daring, and cunning without judgement or regard for a certain aptitude. As Helga Hufflepuff said,
“I will teach the lot and treat them just the same.”
This House values dedication, loyalty, hard work, patience, and fair play among its members. Due to these traits, many Hufflepuffs had a robust moral code and usually made lasting friendships that came from their acceptance of everyone. Hufflepuffs are the underdogs of Hogwarts, and being brought down by Helga’s idea of taking anyone who didn’t fit elsewhere made others believe those students lacked potential. But it couldn’t be wrong as this House is full of exceptional witches and wizards.
The entrance to this common room is guarded a bit more fiercely than the others, having a secret knock to get in by tapping the barrels in the rhythm of Hel-ga Huff-le-puff. Those who got this incorrect were not only barred access but also dosed in vinegar which sends a pretty clear message.
This was once the home of many prestigious witches and wizards, including Newt Scamander, Hengist of Woodcroft (who had built Hogsmeade), Artemisia Lufkin (the first female who established the Department of International Magical Co-operation), Cedric Diggory, and Nymphadora Tonks.
Some last things to note about Hufflepuff is that they never boast about their feats; they tend to fly under the radar by choice as it goes against their nature. In addition, they are exceptionally kind and cheerful with others, although when provoked, they embody their mascot, the badger—becoming dangerously vicious and cunning if needed to stop their enemies. Hufflepuff has also produced the least amount of dark wizards compared to the rest, perhaps due to their pleasant demeanor. Considering all of this, I’d like to guide you on whether or not you belong with House Hufflepuff.
Conclusion
It is important to note that in Hogwarts Legacy, the Houses don’t impact your game or drastically change any outcomes. The main difference resides within the House Specific Quests which you can discover more here. This quest is part of the main story and will introduce you to the same character, only the journey to him changes. But it doesn’t mean your choice is meaningless! Your Hogwarts House defines your character, but it also is a reflection of who you are. Whether that is resourceful, intelligent, brave or loyal you can be sure to have a place back home at Hogwarts.
Hogwarts Legacy is available now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. It will be coming to PS4 and Xbox One on April 4th, and Nintendo Switch, on July 25th.
