With MLB The Show 24 on horizon, let’s take a look at the five best players that will be available on Day 1 of the game for Diamond Dynasty. This list will focus solely on Live Series cards, as those are the cards that will be tied to the players’ real overall ratings in-game, as well as their playability in game.

5. Bryce Harper

The firebrand outfielder turned DH/1B has been a personal favorite of mine in MLB The Show for years now, with a butter smooth swing that never fails to strike fear into opposing righties, and is sure to be a fixture in the heart of any early game lineups you might trot out. In game, his swing is very compact and with more animations being added to this year’s game, it figures to look even better. With great defense over at 1B, serviceable outfield D and above-average speed, this card comes in at Number Five. Bryce cards tend to have really great active perks attached as well, and the flashy home run bat drops are always an added plus.

4. Mookie Betts

Another longtime fan-favorite, the versatility and quickness of Mookie Betts can never be overlooked. Along with one of the smallest possible strike zones in game, Mookie’s ability to hit the ball to all fields against righties and lefties with power makes him a instant problem if you’re able to plug him into a lineup. His great speed and ability to play at almost every position on the field makes him even more valuable, which makes him my fourth favorite player to target on Day 1.

3. Trea Turner

Trea Turner shares many of the desirable traits that Mookie Betts has, including a short, compact swing and a strike zone on the smaller side, which is sure to give headaches to opposing pitchers. He also has very sneaky power, especially versus lefties, and a CF secondary with fantastic speed never hurts. Did I mention speed? Trea can be an absolute demon on the basepaths if used correctly, often making up for his lack of power versus righties with the ability to turn a single into a triple in a heartbeat. Wherever he fits into your lineup, whether you choose to plug him in at the top for a great speed/power combo to jumpstart your offense, or towards the bottom to offer some balance, Trea Turner figures to be a great card yet again this year, and is always a must-get for my squad in the early-game.

2. Mike Trout

One of the greatest players in real life and in game, the Fish Man is notoriously one of the most sought after, often hardest cards to acquire in Live Series, and for good reason. Trout cards are absurdly difficult to afford, and often are only available if you happen to have a large influx of stubs via special edition packs or early access add-ons. Incredible speed on the basepaths and in the field, impeccable fielding with the ability to still play great Center Field, and a sweet and sexy swing makes him one of, if not the most desirable position player in the game year after year.

1. Shohei Ohtani

No surprise here, as Ohtani’s generational, game changing influence on baseball both on and off the field are especially evident in MLB The Show. Nothing figures to change in that regard in MLB The Show 24, and in fact he may have even more elevated stats this time around. While he does have one of the largest possible strike zones in the game much like honorable mention Aaron Judge, his Babe Ruth-like pitching prowess sets him apart from the rest, and that is not lost on his MLB The Show card. With great contact and power vs righties, the only real offensive challenge with Ohtani is sizing up the lefties with funky deliveries, which shouldn’t be too difficult with a little patience. He also has very good outfield defense if you find yourself using another option at DH, and his speed in the field, as well as base stealing abilities truly round out his status as the ultimate five-tool player.
