Zombie games have been a stable part of multiple industries including video games. There are so many games that focus on zombies that there can legit be a large textbook explaining them all. Plus more to come as Dead Island 2 is going to be released on April 28, 2023, and I am very hyped for it to come out. So this got me thinking: What are the five best zombie video games ever? Well, there are a ton of choices I can make and I have decided to make my Top 5 list. Before we go into my Top 5 list I will give honorable mentions.
Honourable Mentions
Dead Island

Source: Deep Silver
I debated putting Dead Island on this list as it is a very enjoyable game, but I feel Dying Light is a better game than Dead Island. I really am interested to see how Dead Island 2 turns out as I am very hyped for that game to come out.
Resident Evil 2

Source: Capcom
If I am going to be honest, I am not really a fan of the Resident Evil games. However, I can’t deny the popularity that these games get, and denying it would just be wrong. Heck, they even made a remake of Resident Evil 2 and if that does not showcase its importance, then I don’t know what does.
All of the Call of Duty Zombie Modes in Every Game

Source: Activision
Gosh, I don’t know which one to choose, because I love the zombie modes in every Call of Duty Game. So I decided to group them all in one here. There still fun to play today and will probably play more of them in the future.
5. The Last of Us

Source: Naughty Dog
Now look, I get why people like this game a lot and it is going to be number 1 on a lot of people’s Zombie game lists. However, I am not a big fan of the gameplay of this game, and the graphics before the updates were not the greatest. It is a lot more polished, but still. What really makes this important is how great the story is and how the relationship between Joel and Ellie in this game has grown. I just wish the writing was at the same level as The Last of Us Part 2.
4. Plants vs Zombies

Source: Pop Cap
Now look, many are going to say that this was too high. However growing up, I loved playing this game. It came out when I was 9 years old and I played it a lot. The tower defense game is so cool, but the fact that they were able to make this game work by combining plants and zombies is just amazing. I also like the specific plants and zombies that are in the game as well. It is extremely addictive and it is an enjoyable game to play.
3. Dying Light

Source: Techland
I freaking love this game. I love the specific type of zombies in the game and it gives that specialty that differentiates it from other games. What really made this game important is the value of nighttime zombies. Bringing the danger and the fear of being in the night. I like how in the game when you do upgrades, points are doubled during the night which is a neat detail.
The story is simple but excellent. I like the main character Kyle Crane a lot and there are nice side characters too. Rias is an okay villain; he is a good one, but I feel like there could have been more done with his character. Overall this game was fantastic. I just wish they did not mess up Dying Light 2 as that game was such a disappointment.
2. The Walking Dead Season 1 (Telltale)

Source: Telltale
Oh my goodness, this game made me love the Telltale Games. I mean The Wolf Among Us and Batman were great, but this game was generational. An awesome story, with amazing characters, and a different way to play where your choices matter. Many games have been influenced by this one and it is hard not to see why. Oh, it was just so perfect and it is a shame that they could not make a great one like Season 2, Season 3, and The Final Season.
1. Dead Rising 1, 2, & 3

Source: Capcom
Dead Rising is my favorite zombie game that I have ever played. I love both Dead Rising 1 & 2 a lot and would play it a lot growing up. So many great characters in both games and to me this game really was the starting growth of zombies in the video game market. Dead Rising 3 is still an enjoyable game to play but is a bit of a disappointment compared to the 1st and 2nd ones. It is not as disgraceful as Dead Rising 4, which is a game that angers me to this day.
So these are my five best video games ever. Do You Agree? If you don’t let us know in the comments what your Top 5 ranking would be.
As a reminder Dead Island 2 will release on April 28, 2023, and is playable on PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, and PS4.
