80 For Brady

80 For Brady Best Comedy

Full disclosure—I generally love films like this. 80 For Brady follows four elderly friends on their quest to see their favorite football player, Tom Brady, play in the Super Bowl in 2017. Featuring a great cast—Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sally Field, and Rita Moreno star—80 For Brady is a fun tale of friendship, companionship, adventure, and passion for your favorite team.

This comedy features many great supporting performances as well, including by Tom Brady himself. Guy Fieri, Rob Corddry, and Alex Moffat also appear.

80 For Brady is available on Vudu and Amazon Prime.

A Man Called Otto

You had me at Tom Hanks. He’s just one of the best of his generation. But aside from that, A Man Called Otto is also a heartwarming movie about a man who has lost everything he loves and hates the world, but finds new friendship and companionship later in life.

Parts of A Man Called Otto remind me of Jack Nicholson in As Good As It Gets—just for today’s audience. It’s also a great story about how it’s never too late to form new bonds and discover a found family. It’s a little predictable, but still very worth a watch. Yes, it had its early release in 2022, but the wide release was in January 2023, so it’s here.

I had my doubts about Barbie at first. First, it was released on the same day as Christopher Nolan’s powerhouse, Oppenheimer. Second, could a film about a toy really land with audiences and have any real substance to it?

As it turns out, the answer was a resounding yes. Margot Robbie is great in the lead role and Ryan Gosling is outstanding as just Ken, but the good news doesn’t end there. Barbie is not just really funny and clever; it’s a thoughtful and heartfelt take on our world.

Cocaine Bear

The title alone guarantees its inclusion on this list. Does anyone else feel like Cocaine Bear came out like 2 years ago? Nope, it was definitely in 2023.

Cocaine Bear became a popular movie on streaming services, and the story is so absurd that it has to be true. In 1985, a shipment of cocaine dropped out of a plane is partly consumed by a bear. The bear then goes on a cocaine-induced tirade and chaos ensues. That’s about all you need to know. Oh, and that Cocaine Bear is also great fun.

Magic Mike’s Last Dance

Channing Tatum and Selma Hayek come together in Magic Mike’s Last Dance, which finds Mike down on his luck and broke. Needing a break, he moves to London—where everyone goes when they have no money, right?—to open a new strip club with Maxandra’s (Hayek) help.

The best comedies have something else to say aside from just being funny. This movie does. It’s about reinvention, fresh starts, and new beginnings. But it’s also pretty damn funny.

No Hard Feelings

Jennifer Lawrence brings some star power to this romantic comedy with an interesting twist to it. Lawrence plays Maddie Barker in No Hard Feelings, and Maddie is tasked with getting Percy Becker (Andrew Barth Feldman) some “experience” before he attends Princeton in the fall.

The best thing about No Hard Feelings is that it doesn’t completely follow the Romantic Comedy template. The star power, performances, and willingness to be different make it one of the best comedy films of 2023.

You People

Jonah Hill stars in You People, Best Comdey

You People gives off strong Meet the Parents vibes, so you should definitely check it out if you liked that film. Driven by a strong cast including Jonah Hill, Lauren London, David Duchovny, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, and Eddie Murphy, You People is a hilarious comedy that also has a lot to say about race and generational differences.

This movie got a limited theatrical release in January 2023, but it’s a great example of how a streaming service can drive viewership. Released on Netflix in late January, You People became one of the most watched Netflix movies in 2023.
