We continue our “Best of” series with the Best Action/Adventure Games of 2023. We had some amazing action and adventure games this year, so if it’s one of your favorite genres, you’re in luck. (Action and adventure games contain puzzles and traversal mechanics on top of combat.)

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Peter and Miles looking out over the city in Marvel's Spider-Man 2

Starting off with a game that has probably the most fun traversal in all of gaming history, we have Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The puzzles are a little on the weaker side, but the web-slinging, gliding, and combat more than make up for it. With a great cast of characters, and the ability to switch back and forth between Peter Parker and Miles Morales, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is a worthy sequel and a fantastic action and adventure game.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

Another sequel that improved on the original is Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. There are fun, force enhanced parkour sections. There are some great puzzles that evolved from the original. And the Dark Souls lite combat is back. Overall, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is a great action/adventure game set in the Star Wars universe and that more than makes it worthy for this list.

Alan Wake 2

What begins as a small-town murder investigation rapidly spirals into a nightmare journey as players take control of the famous writer Alan Wake and FBI Agent Saga Anderson. After 13 years in the Dark Place, Alan Wake returns for one mission: crafting a story that reshapes reality and takes him out of the Dark prison that he’s been locked in for over a decade. Unbeknownst to her, Saga’s been written into the story, forced into a murder mystery that is not only warping the reality around Bright Falls but around the world. With each mission, players learn that Saga and Alan are connected in ways that neither understands.

In a horror story fueled by supernatural darkness infecting the locals of the Pacific Northwest and threatening their loved ones, Wake and Anderson must utilize the light as their weapon and their haven against the dark presence they face. Trapped in a supernatural psychological thriller with limited resources, players take on powerful supernatural entities in close-combat situations using guns, flares, and a multitude of light-based weapons. – Kyle Shultz

Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil 4 finally got its remake after Capcom remade 2 and 3, and it continued the trend of creating an amazing remake with 4. The original game is still there of course, but the controls have been somewhat modernized, and some of the annoyances of the original have been fixed. The original Resident Evil 4 is one of the greatest survival horror games of all time. The remake has improved the puzzles and added some more, and the action is still top quality. It’s well worth picking up if you’re a fan of the original or if you like horror games and somehow skipped this one.

Hogwarts Legacy

Yes, J.K. Rowling is problematic. And yes, a lot of people boycotted Hogwarts Legacy because of that. But it is, after all, a game that came out this year, and it was a pretty good action and adventure game. There are some fun puzzles to solve both in and out of the castle. Some of them remind me of puzzles from the next game in the list without feeling like a copy. The combat is surprisingly engaging and fun, and you can fly around the world on a broom. All those things make Hogwarts Legacy worthy of the best action/adventure games from 2023.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is my personal favorite action/adventure game from 2023. The combat stayed relatively the same from Breath of the Wild, but the new abilities improved on the original in such a huge way. The sheer amount of creative vehicles, weapons, and ways you can solve the myriad of puzzles sprinkled throughout Hyrule is astounding. Not to mention the game is almost 3x as large as Breath of the Wild. If I was stuck on a desert island and could only bring one game, I would be hard pressed to find a game that allowed for almost infinite replayability as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

That wraps up our list of the best action/adventure games from 2023. If we missed anything major or you disagree with a game being on this list at all, feel free to leave a comment. And stay tuned to Strangely Awesome for the rest of the best of 2023 lists in the world of entertainment, Star Wars, books, and games.
