It’s Madden 24 Ratings Week, and the game’s player ratings are being released. While many people focus on offensive ratings for players, it’s equally important to observe the evaluations of defensive players. Therefore, I will be delving into the defensive ratings in the game, starting with the safeties in the league, to identify the Top 10 Overall safeties according to EA Sports.

10. Micah Hyde, Buffalo Bills, 89 Overall

Wait, huh? Didn’t Micah Hyde only play two games last season and suffer a neck injury? Look, I am a big Micah Hyde fan, but this overall is a bit of a headscratcher. Especially since a neck injury is no joke, especially in sports. I think his overall is a bit high here, as I thought he could be around the 85 or 84 overall mark. Hopefully, Micah Hyde can play well, as it is enjoyable to watch him on Buffalo’s defense, which should be a top defense in Madden 24.

9. Jordan Poyer, Buffalo Bills, 90 Overall

It’s not surprising that Poyer received a higher overall rating than Hyde, given his impressive performance and toughness on the field. His ability to play with great hands and resilience, as showcased during his travel to a game despite a collapsed lung, highlights his dedication and commitment to the team. When both Poyer and Hyde are healthy, they form one of the most formidable safety tandems in the NFL. Their skills and teamwork make them a valuable asset to the Buffalo Bills’ defense.

8. Harrison Smith, Minnesota Vikings, 90 Overall

Harrison Smith may be 34 years old, but he is still playing like he is in his prime. It is really impressive as he caught 5 interceptions and made 85 tackles last season. The future Hall of Famer absolutely deserves to still be in the 90 Overall Rating.

7. Budda Baker, Arizona Cardinals, 90 Overall

Budda Baker is undoubtedly the best player on Arizona’s defense right now, and it’s not even close, especially considering the team’s current rebuild phase. As for Baker’s future as a Cardinal, that remains a question for later, but he certainly has the potential to reach a 90 overall in this game.

6. Tyrann Mathieu, New Orleans Saints, 91 Overall

Compared to last year, there has been a slight drop in his overall rating. He went from being a 94 Overall player to 91st overall. The Honey Badger may be 31 years old and showing some signs of decline, but he still has plenty enough in the tank to warrant an overall rating in the 90’s. Despite the small decrease, he remains a formidable player and a key asset to his team. Age may be catching up to him, but his experience and skills continue to make him a valuable contributor on the field.

5. Jessie Bates III, Atlanta Falcons, 91 Overall

This game marks the debut of Jessie Bates as an Atlanta Falcon. During the offseason, he signed a well-deserved 4-year, 64 million dollar contract, given his dominant performance as a part of the Bengals defense. While there might be questions about how his talent will transition to Atlanta in the long term, his impressive skills and contributions warrant a 91 overall rating.

4. Kevin Byrd, Tennessee Titans, 92 Overall

The Titans’ situation entering the 2023 NFL Season may be a bit uncertain, but one player they can count on is safety Kevin Byard. Throughout his career, Byard has proven to be a consistent and reliable force in the team’s secondary. Despite approaching 30 years old in August, he has not shown signs of declining and remains a strong asset for the Titans.

With his experience and skill set, Byard should continue to be a key contributor to the team’s defensive success next season. His ability to make plays and provide stability in the backfield will be crucial for the Titans as they navigate the challenges of the upcoming season.

3. Justin Simmons, Denver Broncos, 92 Overall

The Denver Broncos defense was indeed impressive last season, and one player who stood out in their secondary was Justin Simmons. Despite playing in only 12 games, Simmons had a remarkable performance with 5 interceptions, 7 pass deflections, 3 forced fumbles (with 1 fumble recovery), and 69 tackles. His impact on the field was instrumental in the team’s defensive success.

Unfortunately, the Broncos’ offense didn’t meet expectations last season, and they faced challenges with their incompetent head coach at the time, Nathaniel Hackett. Despite their defensive efforts, the team’s overall performance was affected by various factors. However, Justin Simmons’ contributions on defense were commendable, and he played a crucial role in keeping the Broncos competitive. With his talent and leadership, Simmons remains an essential piece of the Broncos’ defensive unit moving forward.

2. Minkah Fitzpatrick, Pittsburgh Steelers, 93 Overall

I’m kind of stunned that Fitzpatrick is not the highest overall safety in the draft. I mean, he is one of the only good defensive players on the Steelers’ overrated defense. Especially with that secondary, when he is injured, that secondary does not play well. Being the 2nd best overall safety is fine, but he really should be the best safety in this game. I bet the Miami Dolphins regret trading him when they did as he could have been a useful piece to that defense today.

1. Derwin James, Los Angeles Chargers, 95 Overall

Madden 24

I prefer Minkah Fitzpatrick, but I don’t have any issue with Derwin James being considered the top safety in the NFL/Madden. He is an incredibly talented player and a crucial piece of the Chargers’ defense. When he’s healthy, there’s a strong argument that James is the most important player on their defense.

If James had been able to stay healthy throughout his career, he likely would have reached the 99 Club rating in Madden by now. It’s unfortunate that the Chargers blew a lead against the Jaguars in the playoffs last season, and their decision to retain Brandon Staley as their head coach is perplexing to me as well. It’s sometimes hard to understand the reasoning behind certain coaching decisions in the NFL.

So that is the ranking of the Top 10 Safeties’ Overall rating in Madden 24. Do you agree with the ratings given? Let me know in the comment section who you believe should be in the Top 10 Overall Rated Safeties in this game.
