The journey to get the Master Sword in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is pretty difficult. If you’ve taken a look at our Hylian Shield guide, you already know that. But Link can’t fulfill the prophecy without having both the Hylian Shield AND the Master Sword, can he? At the start of the game, the Master Sword is shattered into pieces, left decayed and in shambles at the hands of a reawakened Ganondorf. Not too long after the start of the game, the decayed Master Sword disappears and players aren’t told exactly where to find the famous sword.

In Breath of the Wild, the Master Sword was pretty easy to find as it was in the Great Hyrule Forest, though players needed 13 hearts to pull the sword out of the stone. In Tears of the Kingdom, players will need two full stamina circles to obtain the sword and that’s not to mention the small boss fight you must go through to activate the mission for the sword. To activate this quest, players need to go to the Great Hyrule Forest, though you can’t access the forest like you could in the Breath of the Wild, in Tears of the Kingdom, you’ll have to go underground to the depths and you should look for an area called Minshi Woods Chasm to travel into the depths.

Where to Find the Master Sword in Tears of the Kingdom

Once you’re underground, travel north from the chasm entrance and locate the Rikonasum Lightroot. Right next to that Lightroot, there’s an area that is illuminated with a platform where you can use the Ascend ability to gain access to the Great Hyrule Forest. Once there, you’ll notice that the forest is very depressing. Gloom is running through the forest and even inside the Great Deku Tree. Walk into the Great Deku Tree and you’ll find a chasm called the Deku Tree Chasm, travel down that area, and once you land, there will be some Gloom Hands, defeat those with some bomb flower-infused arrows and once those dissipate, a mini-boss will pop up and it’s Phantom Ganon. It’s highly recommended that you have strong weapons and a good knowledge of the parry system this game has.

Once Phantom Ganon is defeated, travel back up to the Great Deku Tree (there should be an area where you can ascend through to make it easier) talk to the Great Deku Tree and trigger the mission called Recovering the Hero’s Sword. The Great Deku Tree will open your map and place a marker to where the Master Sword is at, he’ll also make a comment about how it’s moving. That’s because the sword is located in the head of the Light Dragon. After completing the quest to free The Great Deku Tree of the gloom sickness, the Light Dragon will be flying much closer to the Sky Islands. Fast travel to an area that is as close as you can get to the marker on your map and glide to the dragon.

Defeat the Dragon

Once you’re on the dragon, walk towards the head of the creature and hit the prompt to pull the sword from the dragon’s head. If you have two full stamina circles, the sword will be pulled out of the head and a cinematic will be played. If you don’t have two full circles, you’ll be thrown off of the dragon and will have to try again later.

Now that Link has the Hylian Shield and the Master Sword, you can work to seal the darkness and bring peace to Hyrule once and for all.
