Geoff Keighly’s annual Summer Game Fest show began in 2020, and this year’s 1 ½ hour-plus show is the first in-person event since its inception. As expected, many companies, AAA and Indie, showed off their upcoming games within the following year. Games previously advertised to be at the showcase, such as Mortal Kombat 1 and EA Original’s Immortals of Aveum were detailed, as well as other surprising announcements. Here are some of the best announcements from Summer Game Fest 2023.

Mortal Kombat 1

Back in May, the Official Mortal Kombat social media channels posted a teaser trailer which led to speculation that the Mortal Kombat franchise is being rebooted again. A full-blown trailer was released on May 18th, confirming such. The website accompanying the trailer also mentioned Kameo Fighters, and other mechanics, which just raised questions. Luckily, Ed Boon answered these questions, which you can find out about here.

Mortal Kombat 1 will release on September 19th on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.

Sonic Superstars

Sonic Team has been doing some interesting new ideas with the Sonic franchise in the last year with Sonic Frontiers and the surprisingly good point-and-click visual novel The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, released on April Fool’s Day this year. Their upcoming new game is a hybrid between 2D and 3D. Sonic Superstars will allow you to play with three players with new and classic models of sonic characters such as Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, and Amy, all of who can harness the power of the Chaos Emeralds. The game will feature the special stages from the original Sonic game on the Sega Genesis.

Immortals of Aveum

The single-player magic-based FPS announced in December of 2022, under EA Original’s branding, an initiative started by the publisher in 2016, which led to Unravel 1 and 2, 2021’s GOTY, It Takes Two, and the Monster Hunter-like game, Wild Hearts. Immortals of Aveum looks to be an ambitious title developed by Ascendant Studios. According to the Steam page, the game will have over 25 spells and 80 talents, which can be upgraded.

Immortals of Aveum is releasing on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via the EA app, Steam, and the Epic Games Store) on July 20th, 2023.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

Prince of Persia Summer Game Fest

The Prince of Persia IP has had a rough time since The Forgotten Sands, the last game in the franchise released in 2010. The remake of 2003’s Sands of Time has been delayed a few times since its announcement in 2020. Ubisoft’s upcoming Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a 2.5D platforming action-adventure game reminiscent of the original 1989 Prince of Persia game.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown will be released on the Epic Store, PS5/PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Amazon Luna on January 18th, 2024.

The Summer Game Fest showcase was packed with AAA and indie games. There are a plethora of games releasing in the next year or two. Let us know whether you are excited about any of these games or any other games shown.
