The Nintendo Switch was released in 2017. Now that we’ve entered the Switch’s seventh year of life, fans are ready for an upgrade. So far, it has been at least confirmed that there will be a Nintendo Switch 2. Here’s everything we know.

The life of the Nintendo Switch has been long and successful. It is the third best-selling console of all time and while people are frustrated with the technology now, many still love their Switch. Nintendo is really good at making themselves a necessary part of the average household. Their exclusive first-party games ensure this, as do their beloved characters.

While consumers enjoy the Switch and the games that come along with it, there have been many complaints about the outdated technology. When the Switch was released, it couldn’t measure up to the consoles of its time; the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One. Now, with the Xbox Series and PS5, it’s severely outdated. Many Switch ports play terribly with frame rate drops and awful graphics, especially for AAA titles.

Although the first-party Nintendo titles look and play well; many desire more from the Switch. It’s one of the few portable consoles, and the only one with such a huge company backing it. Gamers love being able to take their Switch with them everywhere and wish they could play more AAA titles rather than Mario and the ports of older games.

Thus, there were many calls for the Nintendo Switch 2.

There are many speculations about what the Switch 2 will be; what it will look like, what it will play like, and when it will release.

What Happened At Gamescon?

Last year, Nintendo was reported to have shown a demo of the Nintendo Switch 2 to game developers at Gamescom in Germany. Given that this was a private, and somewhat secret, showing; there are no actual confirmed details on the console. However, it was reported that Nintendo showed The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild on the Switch 2. That doesn’t tell us anything about its capability given that Breath of The Wild has seen its days on two Nintendo consoles in the last decade.

It is rumored, however, to have the power of the PS4 and the Xbox One. While that wouldn’t be ideal given that we would want more next-gen tech, that would be on-brand for Nintendo. So far, Nintendo consoles have always been slightly underpowered. They usually pale, in a technological sense, to their competitors. Nintendo consoles rely on creative innovation (think the Wii, Wii U, and Switch; they are the only consoles of their kind) and first-party game exclusivity.

The PS4 and Xbox One are capable of playing AAA games, especially given that support for those previous-gen consoles have ceased due to the PS5 and XSX/S being readily available. So, this would be a major upgrade to the current capabilities of the Switch.

When Does the Nintendo Switch 2 Release?

For the most part, Nintendo has been pretty hushed about the Switch 2. Though, they confirmed the existence of it in a strange way.

Ahead of a planned Nintendo Direct, an official Nintendo account posted this on X (formerly known as Twitter):

“This is Furukawa, President of Nintendo. We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015. We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.”

This post was reposted by Doug Bowser, who is the president of Nintendo of America. This confirms the existence and planned launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, but here’s a couple of things that it also means.

  1. The Switch 2 is extremely unlikely to be released this year. Nintendo had announced the Switch in March 2015 and was released almost exactly two years later in March 2017.
  2. The Switch 2 will be announced this year. The fiscal year ends on September 30th.

What Are The Nintendo Switch 2 Rumors?

In 2022, Nintendo took out a patent for a device that has dual screens.

Evidently, one screen can detach from the other one. Now, this device heavily resembles a Nintendo DS, but many believe that we could be looking at a rough sketch of the Nintendo Switch 2.

This could 100% be true, or it could be the return of the Nintendo DS line.

Aside from rumored detachable screens, fans really just want the Switch 2 to game in 4K and be able to play AAA games. It’s also desirable for the consumers for the device to be backwards compatible, though that’s very likely.

Nintendo has had a track record of backwards compatible consoles. The Wii was backwards compatible with the GameCube, the Wii U was backwards compatible with the Wii, and the handheld DS lines were also backwards compatible. The original Nintendo DS and the Nintendo DS Lite were able to play Gameboy Advance games. Likewise, the Nintendo 3DS line, which had the cartridges looking a bit different, was able to play original DS games.

The Nintendo Switch cannot play Wii U games because the Wii U used classic disks whereas the Switch uses cartridges.

Conclusion

Overall, Nintendo is being very tight lipped about the Nintendo Switch 2 and it has fans on the edges of their seats. We wait impatiently and excitedly for the future of Nintendo consoles to be announced.
