Production is finally underway on James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy movie, the film that’s meant to spearhead the DC Comics film universe in a brand new direction. Today, Feb 29th, 2024, a day that Superman fans recognize as Superman’s birthday, James Gunn revealed a new title for the film and our first look at the costume David Corenswet will wear as he soars through the skies of Metropolis.

“Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday.” Gunn wrote on Instagram. “When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025.”

Superman is the first title of a revamped DC film Universe featuring David Corenswet as Superman as he looks to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

A Familiar Crest?

Comic book fans will be quick to notice that while the new S is not your typical Superman symbol, it’s not the first time we’ve seen it. Corenswet’s Superman crest seems to be very much influenced by Alex Ross, who designed the artwork for Kingdom Come a mini-series from 1996 written by Mark Waid with artwork by Alex Ross. Kingdom Come is a story set in an alternate DC world where the heroes have lost their moral compass and have become as reckless as the villains they fight. That same crest was also previously used as the suit Brandon Routh, reprising his role from Superman Returns, would wear in the Arrowverse Crisis on Infinite Earths TV event.

Earlier in the month, Gunn also revealed on Instagram the first cast photo of the film before their official table read. The cast is as follows, Sarah Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, David Corenswet as Superman/Clark, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, producer Peter Safran, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason/Metamorpho, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Director/Writer James Gunn, Natthan Fillion as Guy Gardner and Maria Garbiella De Faria as Angela Spica/The Engineer.

Creature Commandos

While Superman is the first official DCU film in this new revamped timeline, later on this year we will see Creature Commandos, a seven episode animated series debuting on Max during the Fall of 2024. Creature Commandos is about a black ops team of Monsters assembled by Amanda Waller.

Superman soars into theatres on July 11th, 2025.
