Originally reported by Deadline, James Gunn taps David Corenswet (Pearl, The Politician and We Own This City) and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) to lead Superman: Legacy, the film that will launch DC’s new universe under Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios. Corenswet and Brosnahan tested in front of co-chairs Peter Safran and James Gunn, the latter of which will also write/direct the new Man of Steel feature.

Clark Kent and Lois Lane

This news comes after much speculation and screen testing, Corenswet and Brosnahan were among six actors testing for the lead roles, with Nicolas Hoult and Tom Brittney in contention for Superman and Emma Pickney and Phoebe Dynover as the Daily Planet‘s intrepid reporter.

Superman and Lois Lane have only been portrayed by three actors throughout their history on film, the most popular of which is 1978’s Superman: The Movie, which set the standard for how filmmakers make superhero films. Superman: The Movie starred Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder as Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane, respectively. These two went on to star as their characters in three sequels.

In 2006, Bryan Singer directed Superman Returns, which continues the story from Richard Lester’s Superman II (1980) but starred Brandon Routh as the Man of Steel and Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane. After this feature had a disappointing box office run and mixed reception, a reboot would soon follow in 2013 as Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel came flying in theaters and saw Henry Cavill donning the red cape and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.

The Future of Superman

This franchise would see Cavill returning and becoming a fan-favorite as the Man of Tomorrow for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Justice Leauge (2017), Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021), and an uncredited cameo in Black Adam (2022) which was supposed to lead to a new series of films starring Cavill in the role, though this was course-corrected as Gunn & Safran was hired to revamp the DC Universe, which included hiring a younger actor in the lead role.

While little is known about Superman: Legacy, what is known is the movie will explore Clark Kent balancing life as a young reporter and a Kryptonian warrior and being the embodiment of Truth, Justice, and the American Way in a world that views kindness as old-fashioned. Legacy will be part of the first chapter in Gunn’s Gods and Monsters, which will include Batman: The Brave and the Bold directed by Andy Muchietti, and Swamp Thing directed by James Mangold.

Theatrical releases will likely be supplemented with character appearances in other media. Since the two leads for the film have now been found, next up is the role of Lex Luthor and the supporting cast for the film. Production is speculated to begin in January 2024.

Superman: Legacy soars into cinemas on July 11th, 2025.
