Since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, earning XP has been the main form of progression in Call of Duty games. In Modern Warfare 2, leveling up your rank and weapons is as important as ever for players to be successful. Doing so will unlock valuable equipment, stat-boosting weapon attachments, and unlock Battle Pass Tier Skips.

After players finish the Military Ranks (1-55) they can progress through the Prestige Ranks. Prestige unlocks exclusive calling cards, blueprints, and – most importantly – bragging rights. Whether you want to level up your rank, weapons, or battle pass, there are ways to maximize your time in-game to Level Up FAST.

Double XP

MW2, Modern Warfare 2, Warzone, Double XP, Double Weapon XP, Double Battle Pass Tiers, Double XP Weekend

The most straightforward way to level up faster is to play during Double XP events. This won’t require players to change their behavior when they play to have their progression multiplied. 2XP events usually happen on weekends and are announced a few days before. Be sure to stay tuned to the official @CallofDuty Twitter Page to find out when the events are scheduled so you can plan accordingly. PS4 and PS5 players get an additional bonus due to Sony’s exclusive deal with Activision, so players on these platforms can enjoy an additional 24 hours of 2XP before the main events start.

If there isn’t an ongoing 2XP event while players are looking to level up, they can create 2XP opportunities for themselves using tokens they’ve earned. The tokens come in three distinct types: Double XP (to help with your rank), Double Weapon XP, and Double Tiers. These tokens can be unlocked through the Battle Pass, daily login rewards, completing Campaign missions, or specific DMZ Faction Missions that include various types of Double XP tokens as a listed reward. If you’ve unlocked Double XP tokens, they can be equipped at any time either within a match or in the lobby by pressing your platform’s pause button and scrolling to the Double XP section at the bottom of the menu. Please note that the timer on Double XP tokens counts down in real-time, even when you’re not in a match, so be sure to plan accordingly.

Maximizing your Active Time

MW2, Captain Price, Al Mazrah, Countdown

To get the most out of your MW2 sessions, especially when utilizing 2XP, we recommend players avoid standard Multiplayer modes and stick to modes with longer match times to avoid excessive downtime in Pre-Game Lobbies. An average match of 6v6 Multiplayer only last about 8-12 minutes, but large-scale Battle modes like Ground War have a time limit of 20 minutes.

Warzone Battle Royale matches can also run fairly long if players survive to the final circles of a match, but this is incredibly risky and requires a great deal of skill to be successful. The best way to stay in-game longer is to play DMZ on Al-Mazrah, as it has the longest matches and lowest difficulty of any DMZ Map. If players play their cards right and survive late into the match, they can stay in-game with no interruptions for upwards of 25 minutes.

Progressing the Battle Pass

In MW2 Earning Battle Pass Tier Skips is by far the most passive form of progression in MW2. Battle Pass progress is based on the amount of time spent in-game rather than performance. Unfortunately, the only way to speed up the Battle Pass progression is to utilize Double XP or use the tips we listed earlier to make sure you stay active for as long as possible.

How to Earn Weapon XP FAST

MW2, Weapon XP, Ashika Island, AK47, AK105, Kastov-762

Weapons level up separately from Rank in MW2 and unlock attachments and camos. Leveling Up your weapons is more helpful than ever as weapons that share a Platform can share Attachments, and some Attachments (ex. Optics) are shared across several categories of weapons in MW2. Unlocking Attachments enables players to make custom builds within the Gunsmith to unlock a weapon’s full potential. This is essential to staying competitive in PvP modes. If players want more customization options, base Camos unlocked for one weapon are also able can equipped universally across all others in MW2 and Warzone. For added incentive, keep in mind weapons in MW2 will also carry forward into COD 2023.

Weapon XP will be awarded for anything a player does when holding said weapon in their Operator’s hands. This means that not only will kills and assists help players level up their weapons but so will playing the objective, completing contracts in Warzone and DMZ, and getting melee kills with the weapon. If you enjoy playing multiplayer the most, we recommend the Shipment 24/7 playlist as its extremely close-quarters nature ensures players will always be in the action and earning XP.

In Warzone, respawn modes like Plunder and Lockdown have a similar – but less effective – boost in the action. In my experience, DMZ seems to net the most Weapon XP possible due to its longer match lengths and abundance of AI and objectives. If players stay active and utilize 2XP in a match of DMZ, it’s possible to take a Weapon from Level 1 to its Max Rank by the time they board the helicopter for Final Exfil.
