In Hogwarts Legacy, you start the game with only 20 gear slots to hold headwear, gloves, neckwear, face wear, robes, and outfits; all of which can augment your abilities. Fear not, the Trials of Merlin are here to help.
It’s safe to say that resource management plays a significant role in Hogwarts Legacy, but there is a way you can increase your gear slots and collect even more goodies. But customizing appearance isn’t the only aspect of character creation you can accomplish, as customizations exist for everything from your voice to your wand. Here’s the long and short of it: To increase your gear slots, you need to complete the Trials of Merlin. Once completed, you’ll have an additional 20 gear slots. Sounds easy, right? Well, the rest of the internet is having a time completing them- literally. There are 95 separate Trials of Merlin scattered around the map. Additionally, some Trials don’t even show up on the map, even after an area has been explored.
Finding and grinding through these Trials of Merlin is no mean feat. While the grinding isn’t difficult, the whole aspect is time-consuming. One way to quickly find all the Trials in Hogwarts Legacy is to fly around the map on your broom with Revelio upgraded, revealing points of interest from a distance.

But, once you find them, you still need to complete them. Players can only complete the Trials of Merlin after they complete the main storyline quest titled, ‘Trials of Merlin.’ It becomes available after completing the main storyline quest, ‘The Girl From Uagadou.’ Once students complete both of these quests, they’ll be able to find and complete the rest of the Trials of Merlin. However, students will still need Mallowsweet leaves in their inventory.
While the idea that Merlin went around creating a series of trials to test young witches and wizards is compelling, Hogwarts Legacy could have created a system of expanding gear slots that weren’t so grindy. Unless you’re a completion-ist, odds are that you’ll do the first two Merlin Challenges (six Trials total), and then give it a rest.
Now that you know how to increase your gear slots, expanding the size of your inventory is within your grasp. So, go forth and hoard magical items to your heart’s content.
Hogwarts Legacy is now available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. It will be coming to PS4 and Xbox One on April 4th, and Nintendo Switch, on July 25th.
