Spoilers ahead for The Last of Us Part 1 and Part 2.
The Last of Us Part 1 sees us take control of Joel, a middle-aged man surviving in a post-apocalyptic world after the downfall of mankind thanks to a deadly virus turning its victims into zombie-like creatures. In the first game, Joel meets Ellie, a young, sarcastic girl seemingly immune to the virus. The player gets to control Joel for the majority of the game while Ellie is mostly controlled by AI except for one mission towards the end. Part 2 shakes things up when Joel meets his demise during the introductory segment of the game, which puts Ellie on a path of revenge.
Ellie is a Teen in The Last of Us Part 2
Thanks to an official bio provided by Sony, we know that Ellie is at least 14 in the first game with the bio stating Ellie is “a brave, 14-year-old girl, Ellie has grown up in this harsh world and it is all she has ever known.” With this information and the fact that there is a comic book called The Last of Us: American Dreams that takes place in 2032, one year before the original game where we learn that Ellie has a birthdate of Spring 2019.
While the start of the game takes place in 2034 when Ellie is 15 years old, the majority of Part 2 takes place in 2038, five years after Part 1 which tells us that Ellie is 19 years old during a majority of the game and nearing 20 years old towards the end of the game as the final moments of Ellie’s adventure closes during the summer of 2039.
The Last of Us Part 2: Remastered is out on PS5 on January 19th, 2024.
