Since the Harry Potter universe took the world by storm, gamers have been clamoring to explore and interact with the wizarding world as their own character.

Hogwarts Legacy finally allows us to do just that. Hogwarts Legacy is an Open World action role-playing game, ARPG for short.

Since Hogwarts Legacy is a new IP, there are quite a few questions regarding what exactly is in Hogwarts Legacy. I’m here to answer those questions as best I can.

There’s a fully customizable character creator, allowing you to make your ideal witch or wizard. You start as a 5th-year student, being dropped into Hogwarts. You’ll make friends, fight corrupted creatures, face off against goblins, and fight dangerous witches and wizards using a variety of spells.

Who Are the Developer & Publisher?

Hogwarts Legacy is developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros Games (WB Games) under its Portkey Games label.

Avalanche Software is best known for being directly involved with Disney as the developer behind the Disney Infinity series.

And of course, Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment and Portkey Games are familiar faces, having produced and published various films and games from the Harry Potter universe.

What Platforms Will Hogwarts Legacy Be On?

Hogwarts Legacy is an immersive single-player experience that will release on the PS4 and PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

What is the Hogwarts Legacy Release Date?

There are 3 different release dates for Hogwarts Legacy depending on the console you play on.

The first Hogwarts Legacy release date is on February 10th, 2023 on the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It releases April 4th, 2023 on the PS4 and Xbox One. And finally, it releases July 25, 2023 on the Nintendo Switch.

Does Hogwarts Legacy Have Multiplayer?

Unfortunately, Hogwarts Legacy does not feature a co-op or multiplayer mode. The game is a fully single-player PvE experience.

Does Hogwarts Legacy Have Micro-Transactions?

You’ll be happy to know that Hogwarts Legacy features no microtransactions. However, the Haunted Hogsmeade Shop quest is a PlayStation exclusive.

Hogwarts Legacy & Quidditch

The good news is Hogwarts Legacy features broom flight. The bad news: there will be no Quidditch in Hogwarts Legacy, so those looking to recapture the magic from Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup will be disappointed.

Those looking to fly brooms will be happy to know you can still explore the open world, flying around Hogwarts Castle and the surrounding areas on both brooms and magical beasts. The game also features broom race challenges, giving players another unique way to experience broom riding.

When Does Hogwarts Legacy Take Place?

Hogwarts Legacy takes place in 1890, about 100 years before the events of the Harry Potter books and movies. So you will not get to see any of the students you know and love. However, Albus Dumbledore would be around 9, so he might make a cameo somewhere in the game.

And yet, you will still have the opportunity to experience Hogwarts, including new and familiar locations like Hogsmeade Village.

Players will be able to equip magical gear.

Is It An Original Story?

Hogwarts Legacy features a fully original story. J.K. Rowling was not involved with the game, though they did work with her team to make sure there was consistency with the Harry Potter universe. You get to explore wizarding world lore by playing as a 5th-year student attending Hogwarts.

Can I Go On My Own Adventure in the Wizarding World?

Hogwarts Castle will be fully explorable with quests to undertake and secrets to unlock. There are puzzles to solve and classes to attend. You’ll even be able to explore dungeons and the famous Room of Requirement.

You can also explore the surrounding areas such as Hogsmeade by both foot and mount. You’ll also be able to collect ingredients for use in potions. Hogwarts Legacy really is the ultimate way to go on your own adventure in the wizarding world of Harry Potter.

Can I Craft Potions?

Crafters will be happy to know they can brew potions during your time at Hogwarts. You’ll participate in Potions class, brewing potions outside of class with quick time events. Right now, we know of at least 4 different potions, one of which is a pre-order bonus.

They are:

  • Wiggenweld Potion – Health Recovery

  • Felix Felicis (Pre-Order) – Luck

  • Invisibility Potion – Makes the Drinker Invisible

  • Edurus Potion – Fortifies Defense

What Will The Gameplay Be Like?

During the game, you’ll encounter various machinations, face off with dangerous enemies, and even get a chance to use some of the unforgivable curses.

Unsurprisingly, you’ll be learning a variety of spells like Incendio, Petrificus Totalus, Riddikulus, and much more. You’ll be able to equip various spells and change them in and out as the situation requires.

And yes, dark wizards of the world, Avada Kedavra is available and useable and will insta-kill if it hits. Good news though — there’s also a Dark Arts Battle Arena allowing you to try out the various dark arts without being punished for using them. This truly allows you to experiment and create your own special combat style.

Using the face buttons on the controller, you can shoot off the various spells you have available. They are on cooldowns which forces you to use multiple different spells and not just rely on the magical force of Expelliarmus like a certain famous wizard.

Will There Be A Morality System?

There will not be a morality system, though the choices you make will affect how your witch or wizard develops. Your choices regarding the unforgivable curses will play a part in how the story develops.

Does My House Choice Matter?

At this time, your choice only affects what colors you wear and which common room you have access to. However, since there are companions that will follow you throughout the game, there might be some exclusive to the 4 different houses. For instance, Poppy Sweeting is a Hufflepuff and might be only available if you’re a Hufflepuff.

Since Hogwarts Legacy contains dialogue options, there might even be exclusive choices depending on which house you pick. Those last two points are speculation — you should pick whichever house your heart desires. This is an RPG after all, and on your first playthrough, you should pick whatever will help you feel the most immersed in the world.

Hogwarts Legacy Common Rooms

Hogwarts Legacy Common Rooms

Gryffindor

The common room for Gryffindor features lots of red and gold, with pictures of brave witches and wizards decorating the walls. You enter the common room through the fat lady portrait just like in the Harry Potter series.

Ravenclaw

Ravenclaw’s common room looks very magical. There are purple and blue curtains that give a feeling of the stars. The ceiling even has constellations on them. You enter the room through, surprise surprise, a raven. It doesn’t seem like you need to solve a riddle to enter which is fortunate or unfortunate, depending on your outlook.

Hufflepuff

I hope you like the color yellow because that’s what you’ll find in the Hufflepuff common room. There are many plants hanging from the ceiling and magical plants strewn about the room as well. You enter the common room through a barrel near the kitchens.

Slytherin

Inside Slytherin’s Common Room, you’ll find lots of greens and browns. This is due to the fact that it’s located in the dungeons. You can enter the room through a hidden door that’s uncovered by a snake as you walk to the wall.
