There is a lot of hype going around as all video game fans and comic book fans unite in high anticipation for the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. But before you go web-slinging into this one let me give you all a few recommendations for Spiderman titles that I believe are a must-play before launching Spider-Man 2 for the first time.

Spider-Man 2: The Game (2004)

Spider-Man 2, the game released alongside the film of the same name, is not only fantastic but revolutionized the idea that video games based on comic book characters could be great as well as movie tie-in games. It was the first Spider-Man game to have realistic swinging physics and placed Spider-Man for the first time in an open-world New York City. Without this game, we most likely would not have received later great Spider-Man games, and is still to the golden standard of how to make great web-swinging in a Spider-Man game.

Spider-Man 2 can be found on the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube

Ultimate Spider-Man

Ultimate Spider-Man is a rare type of game that was directly made to coincide with the Ultimate Spider-Man comic run that was written by Brian Michael Bendis, I highly recommend reading it. Not only do you get to experience the same fun web-swinging, free-roaming, and combat from Spidey that we got to experience in previous games, but also Venom is fully playable and is integral to the excellently written plot of the game’s story.

Getting to cause mayhem all over the city while on the other hand playing as Spider-Man who wants to save it. Venom seems to be the central antagonist of Spider-Man 2 this can be a great kickstart for people who are unfamiliar with Venom to see the danger and terror he or should I say they can truly bring to the city of New York.

You can find Ultimate Spider-Man on PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox

Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions

Spiderman Shattered Dimensions was the first Spiderman game to introduce the idea of multi-dimensional variants of the wall-crawler to be playable in gaming. Not only are we able to play with the tried and true classic Amazing Spiderman but we are also introduced to Miguel O’Hara; the Spiderman of 2099, Spiderman Noir, and also the return of the Ultimate Spiderman but this time he is donning the black suit with new abilities. If you are a Spidey fan then this game is a must-own.

Beenox the developers of this game chose to go with a linear level-based structure to the game but this does not detract from it. In each level, one of the Spider-Men is tasked with battling against one of their rouge’s galleries to retrieve a fragment. Fun combat with each dimension having a unique art style with each Spider-Man having their unique approach to combat. From the connection and stories each Spidey has, the reprising voice actors used to play each character in the game and the easter eggs riddled all over, I could talk about Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions for hours but just to sum it up my opinion into one sentence. Play the Game!

Spiderman Shattered Dimensions can be found on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows may be the perfect Spider-Man game for everyone to play outside the Insomniac titles before diving into Spider-Man 2. The story involves a widespread infection of the symbiotes across New York City. Web of Shadows brings back an open-world Manhattan with a flashy combat system with a stylish web strike attack.

Spider-Man has full access to the power of the symbiote allowing him to throw cars and fight using the black suits tendrils. Fighting against enemies like Venom, working alongside allies like Wolverine, and making decisions that can affect and change the outcome of the game. Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is the perfect game to help scratch that symbiote itch we all have before experiencing the same fun in the upcoming Spider-Man 2.

Spider-Man Web of Shadows is available on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii.

Marvel’s Spider-Man

Marvel’s Spider-Man is the first title created by Insomniac that arrived exclusively on the PlayStation 4. Not only was this a breath of fresh air for Spider-Man fans after not having a great Spider-Man game in years during the time but Insomniac managed to create excellent swinging, combat, stealth, and a story that was on the level of many great AAA titles of the era.

With this being a previous game in the timeline of Spider-Man 2 this is a mandatory game to play for players to understand to starting point of where Peter and Miles are in the story. Marvel Spiderman is a great addition to the history of Spider-Man and will hold up as one of the greatest’s superhero games ever made.

Marvel’s Spiderman is available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is currently the latest Spider-Man game released alongside being the latest in the timeline in Insomniacs Spider-Man games. Miles Morales is a shorter-length game that uses many assets from the previous title but what it does expand upon it does in volumes. A trick system was added to the swinging to help the player become more self-expressive while exploring Manhattan.

The game expanded on its combat and stealth mechanics with Miles’s bioelectric powers and his invisible cloaking power. The story also does a great job of exploring Miles as a character and his friends and family, fully allowing Miles to step outside Peter’s shadow and become his own Spider-Man. As the tagline says “Be Yourself”.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is available on PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.

Be Greater Together

Whether it be to experience the rich history that comes with playing Spider-Man games, stop crime across the city, swing around, or just take a trip down memory lane to experience older Spider-Man titles, this list is a good asset to help anyone get started on their journey as the wall-crawler before the arrival of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. As the late and great Stan Lee said it best “Excelsior“!

Marvel’s Spiderman 2 is currently available for preorder and will be released on October 20, 2023, exclusively on PlayStation 5.
