Since the cancellation of Star Wars 1313 in 2013, the gaming and Star Wars communities have hoped for an in-universe game that puts us in the position of a gunslinger, smuggler, or bounty hunter. Many lament that Jedi and Sith are the most boring parts of the Star Wars universe!

With an extensive portfolio of excellent open-world franchises like Far Cry and Assassin’s Creed, Ubisoft has joined forces with Lucasfilm Games to give us Star Wars Outlaws, a sprawling open-world game in the massive universe of Star Wars.

As the Star Wars franchise involves an entire galaxy, there’s plenty of incentive to create more media that have nothing to do with Jedi and Sith. We’re just as excited as you are for Outlaws, so we’d love to share everything we know about the game so far.

A New Type of Star Wars Story

Kay's EML 850, Trailblazer, soars through space.

Star Wars Outlaws takes place between The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi. The Galactic Empire is so preoccupied with defeating the Rebel Alliance as to allow the criminal underworld to thrive. The galaxy of Star Wars has reached the golden age of arms dealers and bribing those in high places.

Cutscenes are amazingly cinematic for those of such an in-depth, technical game, reflecting the intricacies of the Star Wars universe as well as the beloved characters of the original films. Though the music is new, John Williams could’ve written it himself. Even the aesthetic reminds us of the original trilogy.

Vendors from whom to receive quests and skills enjoy strong relevance to the original story and universe. You’ll come across everything from fellow bandits to good, old Storm Troopers. The dynamic between Kay Vess and Nix as well as the witty banter of ND-5 make for excellent dialogue, while Sliro and Vail make for menacing villains who raise the stakes.

A Thrilling Game in Its Own Right

Kay and Nix creep past an unsuspecting droid.

As the first open-world game in its universe, Star Wars Outlaws is an upcoming third-person shooter and ARPG with comprehensive stealth and exploration mechanics. Gameplay revolves around completing high-risk assignments with which to earn tangible rewards and increase Kay’s reputation across the criminal underworld.

To meet the demands of Kay’s missions, players will spend much of the game tracking down skill experts who can improve her abilities and expand her arsenal.

This immersive single-player experience includes all scenarios from intense dog fights and chases across dusty highways to nail-biting stealth and brutal combat (i.e, killing others is easy, but enemies have an easy time killing you, too).

On top of Kay’s stealth abilities, like sneaking and lockpicking, you can also phone in Nix for key distractions and the ever popular Eagle Vision that’s been a key part of gaming since Assassin’s Creed’s release in 2007. This particular method of handling Eagle Vision is unusually creative. In any case, there’s something uniquely satisfying about seeing stealth takedowns in a Star Wars game.

Infiltrating a fort or camp feels like the beginning of The Return of the Jedi, requiring a reliance on ambush tactics instead of pure stealth or pure combat. Look through binoculars to lay out a plan of entry and use stealth to your advantage instead of being stealthy to earn achievements. It’s a dream come true for long-time Star Wars fans and gamers.

Content spans five planets in the Outer Rim, each of which offers a distinct color palette: Toshara, Akiva, Kijimi, Cantonica, and Tatooine. Not only is five planets a lot considering most open-world games span one planet, but you can land your ship on planets in real time. There’s no stock animation between being in space and being planetside.

On the ground, enjoy full renditions of iconic cities, including Mos Eisley with its iconic cantina. From dense marketplaces to stunning vistas, there’s so much to do whether you’re investigating the ancient city of Akiva, hunting the curious wild animals of Toshara, or fighting your way across the lawless deserts of Tatooine.

As sparsely as Jedi appear in Battlefront, Outlaws is the first Star Wars game where lightsabers and Jedi genuinely take a backseat. Lightsabers haven’t appeared in any promotional footage regarding the new title. At last, a Star Wars gunslinger has taken center stage!

Pave Your Way through Star Wars Outlaws

We encourage you to mark your calendars for the release of Star Wars Outlaws. The cancellation of 1313 was probably more disappointing than The Force Unleashed, so I can hardly verbalize my excitement – and I’m not that big a Star Wars fan.

Hype should always be tempered by caution, but from the looks of it, the gaming and Star Wars communities share excitement for what could be among the best Star Wars games of all time.

For your sake, I hope that Ewan McGregor sees a security hologram of… absolutely nothing! Stay tuned for our upcoming field days with Star Wars Outlaws.

Star Wars Outlaws comes to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on August 30th, 2024.
