Yakuza, one of the longest-running RPG series, started all the way back in 2005 on the PS2 in Japan and came to North America a year later. The series based on the criminal underworld of Japan, and the Yakuza, has since sold over 20 million copies as of 2023, according to a recent press conference by Sega. Now, the series continues with Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name.

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name will be released worldwide on November 9th on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Gamepass, and Steam for $49.99.

What Genre is Like a Dragon: Gaiden?

Although the Like a Dragon series shifted gears from an action-adventure RPG to a turn-based RPG in the previous installment, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Gaiden will return to the series roots as an action-adventure RPG.

What is the Story?

Kiryu Kazama faked his own death after the events of Yakuza 6: The Song of Life. Now, in the summer of 2018, Kiryu, now going by the alias “Joryu,” has found his way to the Daisoji Temple and is asked to be an agent for the Daisoji faction. Gaiden serves as a bridgeway between Yakuza 6, 7, and the upcoming Yakuza 8: Infinite Wealth.

How Long Is Yakuza: Gaiden?

The main story of the Yakuza Series is in the ballpark of around 15-20 hours. However, they can last up to 75-100+ hours if you plan on doing everything. Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name will be a much shorter experience than the previous games. In fact, in an interview with Famitsu, the series director Masayoshi Yoko stated that it was originally supposed to be DLC for the upcoming Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.

What Fighting Styles Are Available?

Considering Like a Dragon Gaiden is shorter than previous games in the series, there are only two fighting styles, where there would typically be four styles. The two fighting styles are Yakuza and Agent.

The Yakuza style harkens back to the series’ previous name before it officially switched over in the seventh installment. This style will be familiar to those familiar with Yakuza’s past, as it is filled with kicks, punches, and throws. The Agent Style is a new style that will incorporate spy gadgets with hand-to-hand combat. In this style, Kiryu will utilize a whip that can help me grab enemies and objects from further away. He can also call upon a group of drones that will temporarily stun opponents.

The Like a Dragon series is known for its wacky sense of humor, and Gaiden is no different. While in the Agent style, Kiryu can throw a lit cigarette at a group of enemies, causing it to explode.

Where Does Like a Dragon: Gaiden Take Place?

Kiryu Kazama will be exploring three areas of Japan: Yokohama, Sotenbori, and the Golden Castle. Both cities have been explored in the previous titles, so it’ll be nice to return. The Golden Castle is a giant area located on a ship in Osaka Bay that is filled with various mini games. Here, you will be able to gamble in the casino, change Kiryu’s clothes in the boutique, and participate in the Arena, a returning mini game from the series. The Arena will feature single deathmatches, as well as the ability to create crews for Team fights.

The Golden Castle will also feature returning mini games, such as the karaoke bar, cabaret clubs, and pocket circuit.  

How Many Characters Do We Know About So Far?

Many details regarding the story are unknown, so time will tell the full cast of characters, but here is everyone confirmed to be in the game.

Yuki Tsuruno – Captain of the Watasa family, a subsidiary of the Omi Alliance.

Kosei Shishido – A lieutenant for the Watasa family who is described as a “true yakuza, through and through” according to voice actor Yasukaze Motomiya. Akame – An information broker and hostess from Sotenbori.

Pre-Order Bonuses and Other Information

Like a Dragon: Gaiden will include a pre-order bonus called “the Legendary Fighter Pack,” which will include Daigo Dojima, Goro Majima, and Taiga Saejima as recruitable characters for the Arena. The Yakuza series has primarily used Japanese voice acting with English subtitles, but Yakuza: Like a Dragon was the first to feature both Japanese and English voice acting. So Gaiden will feature both as well.    

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name will release on November 9th, for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Gamepass, and PC.
