Ever wondered how to elevate terror in the survival horror game Dead Space? If so, your question has been answered. Mod creator Reverse Engineer Gamer recently developed a mod for a first-person POV.
EA’s 2008 game pits main character Isaac Clarke against the undead horrors haunting the corridors of the Ishimura. Isaac must also contend with limited ammunition and the cold vacuum of space.
Previously, players experienced the world of Dead Space through a third-person, over-the-shoulder view. A bar on the back of his suit represents his health. A holographic ammo counter indicates how many shots Isaac has remaining.
Something Scary This Way Comes

Shifting to a first-person POV narrows that view. Now, the player must turn their head whenever Dead Space’s excellent sound design announces the approach of a necromorph.
Removing Isaac’s character model also strips a layer of detachment for the player. It enhances the immersion and draws the player deeper into the game. This heightens tension during Isaac’s struggle to escape the Ishimura.
With a focus on out-of-the-box thinking, Reverse Engineer Gamer uses Cheat Engine software to modify games like Dead Space.
The first-person mod is available to download for fans of the original, as well as new players, offering a fresh point of view on the claustrophobic corridors of the Ishimura.
Dead Space is available on Xbox, PlayStation, and Windows platforms. A remake of the game was released in January 2023.
