The Gulag is arguably one of the most iconic features of the Call of Duty video game franchise. In the game, players take on the role of a WWII Russian soldier as they attempt to escape from the dreaded Stalin-era concentration camp, known as the Gulag. The Gulag gives players a second chance in the match if they’re defeated. It is a 2v2 fight, where four random defeated players are paired into teams to fight for a chance to be respawned.
The Gulag formed part of the Soviet Union’s Stalinist regime, which was responsible for the widespread incarceration and execution of millions of dissenters, political opponents, and religious dissidents. In spite of the conditions within the camp, many of its inmates managed to survive in spite of the harsh living and working conditions.
