From its release in November of 2009 under the combined leadership of Infinity Ward and Activision, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 has been revered as one of the best first-person shooters among the COD community with some fans arguing that it beats its predecessor Modern Warfare because of the storyline that built a legacy beyond the game. As the sixth installment in the Call of Duty series, the game was released on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 with compatibility for next-gen consoles that would release in the coming years.

Call Of Duty: Making Gaming History
With a mediocre response to the 2021 release of Vanguard, it was hard to say whether or not the Modern Warfare reboot would post significant numbers for the brand. Any questions of doubt were answered as the game would reach 1 billion in revenue after its first 10 days on the market, giving it the highest sales for any COD game since its first release in 2003.
A comment made by Activision in response to the record-breaking performance of the game: “The strong performance was broad-based, and digital sales were particularly robust on PC and in Asia-Pacific after Activision expanded distribution of the title to Steam’s PC digital storefront”.
Aside from breaking the bank in the best way possible, streaming numbers have also skyrocketed with total hours played being the highest ever for a premium COD release after launch. With the momentum in their favor, there is a lot of action happening behind the scenes as Microsoft is trying to make a play by acquiring Activision Blizzard. Reports have also stated that Activision aims to release a new standalone game in the Modern Warfare timeline as opposed to only adding DLC content to MW2.

Only One Way Forward
The situation for the COD franchise right now is make or break. The fans have responded and the numbers show that Modern Warfare is still one of the best series within the franchise and it would be remised if Activision dropped the ball and went left field on a new story rather than expanding on the timeline gamers have been anxious to continue since we were first introduced to beloved names like ‘Soap’ and ‘Ghost’. If all the logistics can get handled behind the scenes I see Call of Duty making its way back to the top of the gaming world and staying for a long time.
Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2Â is playable on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
