The Call of Duty marketing cycle is about to be in full swing, and fans are eagerly anticipating an official reveal any day now. While official information has been scarce – save for a few teases on the official CoD Twitter account – there is a multitude of credible leaks circulating the internet, and several of the important questions fans are asking about the game can be answered right now.

Even though the title hasn’t been officially confirmed, leaked graphics from a Monster Energy promotional campaign tell us that the next game in the series is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, developed by Sledgehammer Games. The blockbuster franchise’s 2023 entry is going to be hotly anticipated not only as a sequel to the recent Modern Warfare games – which broke sales records among the franchise – but also as an echo to the original Modern Warfare Trilogy’s epic finale, which wrapped up the story of Captain Price and the rest of Task Force 141 over a decade ago.

When is the COD 2023 Reveal?

First Look at the COD 2023 Reveal Event

With the announcement of Season 05, the official Call of Duty Blog detailed that the reveal event of Call of Duty 2023 will happen during a Warzone limited-time mode during the season, which the Xbox Store page lists as ending on September 20th. This LTM will see operators teaming up with Shadow Company to combat the mysterious Konni faction for control over chemical weapons. Players might recognize Konni from the MW2 mission “Hindsight”. Konni is the Russian Ultra-Nationalist PMC Group that ambushes Shadow Company and their weapons shipment from General Shepherd.

Though details on the event are scarce at this time, players can set some expectations from the previous Warzone reveal events. During The Pandemic, Activision used them to announce Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War and Call of Duty Vanguard. These LTMs consisted of unique and cinematic gameplay experiences which rewarded players with in-game items and showed each game’s respective Reveal Trailer upon completion.

Latest COD 2023 News

On June 17th, the official Call of Duty Twitter account posted a poll asking fans “Should #MWII Operators, Weapons and Bundles carry forward into Call of Duty 2023?” with the two options being “Yes” and “Yes, when is reveal?”. This confirmation got many players excited, as fans of the franchise have grown frustrated as the content they earn and purchase in-game is made obsolete with each subsequent game release.

About a week later, the official Call of Duty Twitter account acknowledged MW3’s leaked key art in an unusual marketing beat on June 24th. They asked if “…anyone [has] an energy drink they can spare?” as a tongue-in-cheek nod to the Monster Energy promotional material which spread across the internet earlier than intended. The next day, the account asked fans to list “III reasons why [they] play Call of Duty“, a nod to the Roman Numerals on the leaked key art. Sometime after, Sledgehammer Games changed their banner image on Twitter to a new, redesigned logo which replaced the letter E with an orange Roman Numeral 3 rotated 90 degrees, consistent with the leaked branding.

COD 2023 Story Explained

Captain Price, Makarov, Makarov Polaroid

The previous two entries in the new Modern Warfare trilogy have been set around the time of their release, so it’s safe to assume MW3 will take place in late October or early November of 2023. This puts it approximately one year after the ending of MW2. When we last saw Task Force 141 at the end of the campaign, the crew was out for drinks with Station Chief Kate Laswell. After taking a moment to celebrate “cutting heads off snakes” – as Captain Price put it – Laswell passes Price and the rest of 141 a photograph of an Ultra-Nationalist threat in Russia, whom Price identifies as Makarov.

Price tells Laswell – despite what intel has led her to believe – that Makarov has been around and made himself known to the Captain in the past. While we are unsure of their past connection in the current Modern Warfare timeline, it’s safe to assume MW3 will follow Task Force 141’s hunt for Makarov; especially after the “No Russian” tease in MW2′s post-credit scene. Al Qatala’s former commander Hadir also warned of “The Real Russians” with his dying breath in the last chapter of MW2‘s final Raid. It is almost certain that Makarov will be working with – if not spearheading – the mysterious Konni PMC since they share an ideology.

COD 2023 Leaks and Rumors

Mock-up based on leaked MW3 screenshot

Twitter user @BobNetworkUK leaked several data-mined images from MW3, which have since been taken down by Activision for violating copyright, proving their legitimacy. The images give us a look at several new weapons, maps, and features that will be present in this year’s entry, but please note since these images are from an Alpha build or earlier that content may still be subject to change.

Players will be excited to hear that a lot of iconic maps and weapons from the history of the franchise will return in this year’s title. We’ve seen images of Terminal and Scrapyard from Modern Warfare 2 (2009), and returning weapons include the iconic F2000, ACR, and UMP-45. Since the full suite of Weapons from 2022’s MW2 will carry forward, MW3 is free to include weapons that weren’t in the previous entry and could expand upon MW2‘s weapon platforms.

Other Returning Features

There are several returning features that Call of Duty veterans are sure to be pleased about. Players can look forward to the addition of Red Dots on the Mini Map to help locate enemy players when they fire unsuppressed weapons, although it is unclear at this time if the feature will be on by default or activated from a perk like in Call of Duty: Vanguard. The Ninja perk will be making a highly requested comeback and will help reduce the volume of players’ footsteps if they want to take a more stealthy approach to PvP combat.

Although some recognizable perks are returning, MW3’s perks will uniquely factor into players’ load-outs. Players select their perks when customizing their operator’s gear, which will grant corresponding bonuses. There are 4 different slots that players can customize and leaked images detail that among them are Gloves and Vests that give players unique abilities. For example, there may be Gloves that give a player a perk that allows them to reload or use equipment faster. In the leaked images, we also saw a Grenadier Vest and an Overkill Vest which we infer will allow players to carry more lethal/tactical equipment, and two primary weapons respectively.

COD 2023 Introduces Zombies Mode to the Modern Warfare Series

Modern Warfare 2019 Zombies Concept Art

Concept Art from the canceled Modern Warfare (2019) Zombies mode

It has been heavily rumored for some time that MW3 will include a Zombies mode, and the leaked images from BobNetworkUK seem to confirm that as they contain operators wearing hazmat suits covered in Dark Aether Crystals, an item first introduced in Black Ops: Cold War Zombies mode. MW3‘s Zombies mode has been described as Outbreak 2.0 and will likely mix features from Cold War‘s Outbreak mode and Warzone’s DMZ.

This means that rather than the traditional round-based Zombies experience, this mode will likely focus on large-scale maps filled with objectives for players to complete in a more open-world experience. At this time, it is unsure if MW3 Zombies will be part of the game’s premium offering or if it will be integrated with Warzone like DMZ.

Despite rumors in 2023 that MW2 would have a major expansion and a second year of seasonal updates, as we reported earlier this year, Sledgehammer Games led development to make a new game that follows up MW2. This seems to be a trend in the industry, with Assassins Creed: Mirage following a similar development path. However, MW3 comes at a premium $69.99 price tag – versus Mirage‘s $49.99 so fans are likely to expect a lot of content and value. I believe they will have plenty to be excited about when the game releases in the Fall.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is rumored to release on November 10th, 2023, and will be available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
