When picking the class you want to play while exploring through Baldur’s Gate 3, my first advice is to play what makes you happy first and foremost. BUT. Trust me, being a sorcerer will make you happy, and here’s why.

It’s all about the charm, baby:

Being a sorcerer immediately gives you good cause to increase your charisma score, as it’s the skill your magic abilities are based on. When playing a solo play-through, or even with friends who prefer the hit-and-talk-later approach, your ability to smooth things over with your words gives you a way out of and through things in Baldur’s Gate 3, which is extremely useful. With a game like this or Dungeons and Dragons, you’ll find that talking can have just as much impact as rushing in for the fight, arguably more if you ask me. Being a sorcerer allows you to be a smooth talker who can back up your words with tricky, hard-hitting spells.

Baldur's Gate 3 has a wide cast of characters to enjoy.

Knock ’em out, one-by-one… from wa–y over here:

Not only does increasing that charisma score help with convincing, deceiving, and intimidating, but it also increases your power when attacking. Sorcerers are what I lovingly refer to as glass cannons. They are definitely squishy or lacking in the HP department, but their spells are meant to hurt. The amount of spells you have access leaves room for fun combos. You also gain sorcerer points that can be used to exchange for spell slots if a battle is wiping you through or if you know using that high-end spell one more time can make the difference.

Another thing unique to sorcerers is their meta magic; they are special powers only sorcerers have that consume sorcery points as an alternative way to use them. These can give you an extra action, allow you to save your friends from splash damage, increase the duration of the spell effect, etc; the list of meta magic choices given is a decent size, too, to fit your play style. It makes for an entertaining battle play as long as you can set yourself up and away from the up-action.

Magically Superior:

Another nice thing about playing a sorcerer is you’re the only one. None of the party members you roll with are, which makes one feel more like you were specially chosen. If that floats your boat. I like that it gives you new options for dialogue, which is noticeable when interacting with magical people and things. Not going to lie; watching your natural magic dominate things is pretty fun. It can immerse you further into the game being one of a kind.

Sorcery won’t be for everyone, but it should be. I’m kidding, but I recommend it all day long, and if you can accept the challenge of keeping out of danger in the lower levels, growing a sorcerer is a blast. Give it a shot, let us know what you think of the class in the comments, and enjoy your magical birthright!
