When you start to get into a new RPG, or perhaps this is your first introduction to one, I know firsthand how it can be exciting yet intimidating when your first real choice comes up, and you know in the back of your mind this may change everything you see through the game to come. Sometimes, we need some help to get the best game experience possible. Here are some tips I think could be useful as you dive deep into  Baldur’s Gate 3.

This is my initial opinion for the early access gameplay for experienced gamers and newbies alike. I have been playing on PC, and there may be things I have missed, or you feel are trivial. I encourage you to give your helpful tips in the comments below. With that said, let’s get to it.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Beginner Tips

1) Be You:

This may be obvious, but my first and foremost suggestion is to play who and how you want. Baldur’s Gate is a chance to immerse yourself in a different world that focuses gameplay on being close to that of Dungeons and Dragons. I took this opportunity to play one of my original characters, or at least a version of him, a Changeling Psion Sorcerer disguised in his elven form.

I could use spells I gave him in his young levels, which made my experience much sweeter as I embarked on a game series I had never played until now. Let me say this, make a character you love, and you’ll have a deeper experience playing any role-playing game, especially this one.

This game is brand new and will be out of early access on August 3, 2023, for PC, which means there are bound to be a few bugs here and there as the developers tirelessly fine-tune this gorgeous game. This is not a fault but more a reminder for good practice, as I encourage this for every game you invest your time in that allows saves. Nothing is worse than feeling accomplished with your work to have it all erased in the blink of an eye.

Also, I am a player who sees perfection in what I want when I am playing games such as Baldur’s Gate. If you’re like me and will waste your time reloading save after save to see what each dialog option does for you in order to find your favorite. Well, no judgments here! Save often, and thank yourself for it later!

3) Explore!

Be the adventurer you’re born to be from the safety of your home. Look everywhere, investigate everything, and talk to everyone. Know that everything you do, and I mean everything, can and will impact your gameplay throughout Baldur’s Gate 3. That’s the beauty of RPGs like this game! Nothing is more fun and rewarding as you see your decisions shape the world around you. Encountering a new place that gives you insider knowledge of where the best route is once given a quest or finding the person a sad note belongs to, helping them find the closure they needed is the best.

It gives me the same experience of giddy pleasure when I’m reading a book and the author throws a punch at something funny or impactful you learned in an earlier chapter. Having all the knowledge I can makes my decision-making in this game easier as it will open up more possibilities for the future to mold into. Just be cautious of your level; you don’t want to be caught in a place that kicks your butt before you’re ready.

4) Birds Eye View

The last tip perfectly blends into this one. Utilize the ability to maneuver your camera! This ability allows you to find your path and pique your interest in other places in the game you wouldn’t have seen easily without it.

I am an avid DnD player and see it as your Dungeon Master’s bird eye view. The game does a great job of giving you a wide area to scout around your character while still hiding away goodies you may find along the way. Allow it to set up the scene for you like any good DM.

5) Pick A Friend, Any Friend

Speaking of goodies while you adventure through the game, I highly suggest gathering all the available party members the game gifts you! They can be a huge strength in your arsenal, essentially allowing you to try out different classes along the way. They may have their own personalities, and maybe some you aren’t too keen on, but if you’re like me, you see it as a personal challenge to catch them all like Pok√©mon and make them love you like they can’t imagine how they lived without you all their lives.

Is this a bit of a complex issue? Yeah, maybe, but hey, it’s my complex. Growing alongside these well-thought-out NPC characters is just another way to enrich the game and reach for the story you want to see. You can level them to your liking for gameplay and gaining abilities you cannot acquire as your character is advantageous. Even they start to admit this journey is more fun together than alone.

6) Fight Or Flight?

Battles are another good example of why you should play the character you want to. Playing in a way you enjoy at first can make all the difference. There are many ways to defeat your foe in Baldur’s Gate 3, but there could be better sets ups to make it easier. They are played in an initiative turn-based style, and having a strategy is very useful.

Think about who you have in your party and how your strengths come together. I suggest you consider the mission and adjust who you take along for the ride. Another good reason to level the given NPC’s and build repour amongst the party. It could have the potential to make or break your fight.

6.1) Another piggyback tip for battles would be to be aware of what spells you have cast amongst the entire party and where everyone’s health lies. It may be easy to pop some heals down the ol’ gullet, but regaining spells is not that easy, and if you are playing a caster, I can tell you it’s not as much fun going into a battle without any spells slots to bring out the big guns.

Utilize both your short and long rests. Short rests will give a quick health boost and can replenish certain classes’ abilities, but a long rest will get everyone back to normal and feeling raring to go. (Just make sure you’re picking up food with the Camp description as you loot! You’ll need it to get a restful long rest.)

7) Shhhh

Lastly, and perhaps most important, is to be stubborn with who you tell about your–affliction. Without giving any spoilers, or spoiler alert, not many people in this world will understand what you are facing and will be quick to help in a way that isn’t ideal for a character you want to see make it to the end.

Guard your secrets until you know you’re safe to seek the help you need, confide in the ones you’re going through it with, and make the best decision you can for you and your party; remember, it’s in your head.

That’s it. That’s what I have in the way of tips for getting started. I hope you found something helpful in my ramblings, and I encourage you to post a comment below with useful ideas to help those just getting started. Above all, have fun and don’t take it too seriously. Enjoy yourself and create the world for yourself in the style that suits you best! Happy gaming!
