Starfield is a massive RPG full of new adventures to experience as you travel through space. Whether you choose to be a pirate, space cowboy, or explorer, there are various factions you will interact with as you embark on your journey. As you discover the different factions, you’ll discover some large Starfield cities scattered throughout the galaxy.

Starfield cities serve as massive hubs for the different factions and areas of space. They also add a lot of the character and lore of the universe. Each of Starfield’s major cities has a distinct look and feel to it, and a personality all it’s own. In a universe where conflict and political intrigue abounds, even the cities ooze the distinctions of one part of the galaxy from another.

Cities in Starfield

Starfield Freestar Collective Akila City

At launch, there were four major cities in Starfield:

  • Akila City
  • Cydonia
  • New Atlantis
  • Neon

That doesn’t mean that there won’t be other places worth visiting, though. There are several large settlements and other areas of interest that you will want to check out in this vast galaxy. The four cities listed above are simply the four large metropolis-size areas on the Starfield map.

Knowing more is fun, so let’s take a bit of a deeper look at each of the four Starfield cities:

Akila City

Akila City Starfield

Have you ever dreamt of being a space cowboy? Akila City is the place for you. Located in the Cheyenne system, Akila City is home to the Freestar Collective and is home to those who value freedom and individuality above all else.

Akila City looks and feels worn when you are there, as it is an old city. But it also has a constant vibe that’s a hybrid of carefree happiness and the Wild West. Early on in the game, you’ll have a chance to stop a bank robbery in progress in Akila City, and can become essentially your own version of Walker, Texas Ranger after that. If you choose.

Our very own solar system is referred to as “the old neighborhood” in Starfield, and Mars is one of the first planets with settlements created by humanity. Cydonia is a large but underground city on Mars. You’ll get a chance to experience Cydonia very early in Starfield on a quest with Constellation.

New Atlantis

New Atlantis is the capital of the United Colonies. It was founded in 2160, and became the capital in 2161. For context, the United Colonies were founded in 2159, so New Atlantis is the first capital of the huge organization.

Unlike the dark and worn aesthetic of both Akila City and Cydonia, New Atlantis is a sparkling, modern metropolis. It is thriving with commerce and life, and everything about the city screams innovation and futuristic technology.

The city of New Atlantis is huge, and there is a tram that will shuttle you between the spaceport, residential area, and commercial area of the gigantic city. You will visit New Atlantis very early in the Starfield story, as it is also the home of Constellation.

Neon Starfield City

Think of Neon as the city that has both the glitz and glamour, but also the seedy underbelly of society. It’s like a Starfield version of Las Vegas — full of entertainment with a strong side of drugs and illegal activity.

Neon is a former fishing city that transformed into a hub for drugs when the city’s parent company discovered that drugs were much more profitable than fish. The city is home to Aurora, a drug only legal inside Neon.

Starfield is available September 6, 2023 on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox Game Pass.
